On this day in in 1918 the secret wife of Francis X. Bushman, one of cinema's earliest heartthrobs, sues him for a divorce. Bushman's fans were shocked to learn he had a wife at all. Bushman's contracts had specified that the existence of his wife and children not be publicized in order to foster his image as a romantic bachelor. After the scandal, some theaters refused to show Bushman's movies.
